2023 is the year for a fresh start and fresh beginnings! The new year is full of eco-friendly opportunities that can have a lasting effect on our planet, and all you need to do is start being more aware of the small things you do every day.

It’s the perfect time to start new habits and make changes, and although good habits aren’t always easy at the beginning, they are worth it in the end. We’re familiar with the usual resolutions: exercise, get organized, save money, and other suggestions we are sometimes reluctant to follow. To help you achieve more sustainable goals and a more balanced life, we’ve listed a few good habits that you can quickly start today with minimal effort.

Reuse, Recycle, Reduce

There is now more talk and awareness than ever about climate change, waste, and pollution, which can make anyone feel hopeless in tackling such a big issue. However, the smallest of steps taken by many can make a big difference.

Start when you wake up in the morning and follow your daily routine to identify some habits you can improve. Turn off the faucet or minimize the water flow while you brush your teeth or wash your hands. When brewing your fresh cup of joe, switch to reusable coffee cups instead of disposable ones. If you brew coffee yourself, consider using those grounds as fertilizer for your plants. Many coffee shops now offer their used grounds for their customers’ gardens!

When a packed lunch is a must, bring metal utensils and avoid using disposable plastic. If you prefer restaurant dining, skip the drinking straw. According to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, plastic straws are a major culprit in plastic pollution, and “Most plastic straws simply break into ever-smaller particles, releasing chemicals into the soil, air, and water that are harmful to animals, plants, people, and the environment.” One way many beachside restaurants have increased awareness and enforced sustainable practices is by offering only eco-friendly straws that could end up being washed up on the beaches and won’t hurt sea life.

Minimize Energy Consumption

Flipping a light switch off is so easy to do and can make a huge impact on the energy we use daily. Turning off the lights when you leave a room is a great habit to teach the younger generation. Another great habit? Unplugging unused devices. According to Harvard University, “Devices like televisions, microwaves, scanners, and printers use standby power, even when off… In the US, the total electricity consumed by idle electronics equals the annual output of 12 power plants (EPA).”

There is a long list of changes we can all make in our daily lives, and we encourage you to search for and shop from sustainably responsible businesses that offer sustainable products.
